In 1929 Enzo Ferrari established
Scuderia Ferrari, a company set up for the purpose of preparing Alfa Romeo cars and bringing them to the trackside. The company
Ferrari was officially born on
1 September 1939 in Modena, with the foundation by Enzo Ferrari of Auto Avio Costruzioni. Its first remit was the manufacture of grinders and aircraft parts, and only started making motor vehicles as its main activity in 1947.
The first car, the “
Auto Avio Costruzioni 815”, was produced in 1940, and only two were made, whilst the second, the
Ferrari 125 S, only in 1947 due to the Second World War, and was driven by Franco Cortese, the first Ferrari driver and tester. The single-seater made its debut at the Italian Grand Prix on 5 September 1948 in Turin, driven by Frenchman Raymond Sommer, who came third.
The road car, the
Ferrari 166 Inter model, on the other hand, was produced in 1948 and presented on 6 October 1949 at the Paris Motor Show.
